ERE Highly Gifted Magnet
Vision StatementOur school provides exceptional students an outstanding and unique educational opportunity in a positive, nurturing climate. Students participate in rigorous educational experiences that are designed to meet the diverse academic, social and emotional needs of the highly gifted population. Students are given tools to work cooperatively in groups, to value and respect diversity, and to develop a healthy self-image. Each student is evaluated and challenged in their specific area/s of need and in their area/s of excellence.
HG Magnet Enrollment CriteriaTo qualify for a highly gifted magnet program, students who are residents of LAUSD must meet the criterion of 99.9% on an intellectual assessment administered by the LAUSD Psychological Services Branch. Students who receive a 99.5%-99.8% are considered highly gifted applicable and may apply to a Highly Gifted Magnet. Parents/guardians may contact the Gifted/Talented Programs Office to verify if the student qualifies to apply to a highly gifted magnet program. (213) 241-6500
Enrollment in the magnet program requires an eChoices LAUSD application. Applicants to the magnet programs MUST be residents of LAUSD at the time of application and while participating in the magnet programs. Out of area students are not eligible to apply for this magnet. Post office boxes are not accepted as proof of address. Please check if LAUSD is your resident district by visiting the LAUSD Resident School Identifer. *2021-2022 School Year Application Announcement from LAUSD: During school closures, intellectual testing for identification as highly gifted (HG) or highly gifted applicable (HGA) has been suspended. Based on how the tests are normed, standardized assessments must be conducted face-to-face by an LAUSD school psychologist in order for the test results to be valid. As a result, the on-time application for HGM has been adjusted and will occur in spring 2021. Highly Gifted Magnets will not be listed in the Choices/Opciones application during the on-time application window (October 1-November 13). When schools safely reopen, testing will resume and if eligible, interested applicants may use the late application to apply for a HGM and be considered "on time." Please note that the closing of schools since March has and will continue to impact the timeline for assessments. The Gifted/Talented Programs office is committed to addressing HG eligibility as quickly and equitably as possible. Referrals for HG applicants with pending 2019-2020 school year referrals will be prioritized for testing when schools reopen. The second highest priority for testing will include approved reassessment cases that were initially scheduled for testing in spring 2020, and lastly, any new HG referrals. BACKGROUND INFORMATION AND STATEMENT OF PURPOSE
The Highly Gifted Magnet is a small Magnet Center on the campus of Eagle Rock Elementary School. It is part of the LAUSD voluntary Court-ordered integration program and attempts to ameliorate the five harms of racial isolation: Low Academic Achievement, Low Self Esteem, Lack of Access to Postsecondary Opportunities, Interracial Hostility and Intolerance, and Overcrowded Conditions. Although our students reside in many different neighborhoods of Los Angeles, they are bound together by their exceptional intelligence and ability to think far beyond their similarly aged peers. Our rigorous program provides a supportive learning environment in which students acquire knowledge and skills, develop a healthy self-image, positive social behaviors, and learn to appreciate and embrace diversity. Classroom pedagogy considers the social emotional needs of our students and helps them to develop a healthy relationship with their own talents and abilities. Students are challenged to think creatively, to approach problems from many points of view, to write with meaning and eloquence, to use critical thinking skills in problem solving and to present their findings orally and in writing. Our students are taught to use technology and artistic expression to demonstrate mastery of the standards. Project-based assessments, choice of alternative assessments, and conventional tests are all used in order to reach students at their interest level and to assess their understanding in unique ways. Respect for other students, the community and the environment is fostered through discussions, modeling and simulations. Our goal is to prepare our students to reach their potential as lifelong learners and as valuable members of the community and the world.
