Eagle Rock Newsletter
Welcome Back Families!
Dear Eagle Rock Elementary Students and Parents,
We hope all of you had a restful summer. We are excited about a very positive 2019-20 school year and we want to provide you with some basic information to ensure a successful start.
The school year and classes begin on Tuesday, August 20, 2019 with the first bell at 8:05AM and the start bell at 8:10AM. Students walking to school may enter through the Maywood, Chickasaw, or Fair Park gates. Car drop-offs on Fair Park only. Please be aware that the playground has supervision beginning at 7:30AM; that is when the front gate on Fair Park is opened. Other gates open at 7:45AM. Classroom numbers can be found in the center of the playground and that is where students will be picked up on the first day. Free breakfast is available to all students at 8:10AM in the classroom.
Applications for free and reduced lunch benefits can be completed online beginning now; go to www.myschoolapps.com. Please do so immediately. All families must complete a meal application regardless of eligibility or household income. If you do not have access to an online computer, paper applications will be sent home the first week. Last year’s meal benefit status stays the same through the month of September. Please send a sack lunch, or money ($3.00 for lunch), until your eligibility status is determined if you’re new or did not have free/reduced lunch. Every effort is made to process meal applications within 24 to 48 hours. Only one application per family is required. It is critical for determining Title 1 status as a school, which correlates directly to federal funding. We are currently not meeting Title 1 eligibility due to a small number of families; please seek advice for completing form if your income is irregular. The information you provide is confidential.
Dismissal is at 2:38PM Mondays, Wednesdays-Fridays; and at 1:38PM every Tuesday. A Free HOT Supper is available to any student upon dismissal, but must be eaten on campus at a table – please dispose of trash properly. Any students remaining on campus must check in with the Youth Services Coach if on campus beyond 2:50PM (1:50 Tuesdays). Playground hours are from 2:38PM to 6:00PM daily, and only open to our own students registered with a program. Older siblings may pick up elementary siblings, enjoy a free supper, but may not “hang out”. Please note: Students may not linger in front of the school on the lawn, nor on the welcome benches, waiting for rides as we do not have supervision there past 2:45PM. It is not safe for your child to “hang out” waiting for a ride; parents must park and get their child from Coach if picked up past 2:45PM.
NOTE: We are a cell phone/device free zone at school. Once entering the gates in the morning, phones must be OFF and in backpacks. They may not be turned on and used at any point during the day, and not seen while on campus. Please make sure rides are discussed in advance; office phones are available for emergencies. More details in the Parent Handbook that will be online.
Your child will receive a very important opening packet within the first week of school. Review the content with your family. Fill out the attached forms promptly and send them to school with your child. Expect weekly Sunday evening calls/emails from the me updating you with highlights for the upcoming week. Look for our weekly eNewsletter put out by our Community Rep, Sally Navas, with important dates and links. Please support these efforts to reduce our carbon footprint and provide us with the contacts we request in our opening packet.
On August 19th we will hold an ETK, TK and Kindergarten Orientation at 1:00PM, a Magnet Orientation at 2:00PM, and an orientation for other new students in grades 1-6 at 3:00PM in the auditorium. You are also invited to attend our PTA “meet and greet” on Monday, August 19th from 3:00PM to 5:00PM in the Multi Purpose Room (MPR). Class lists will be posted in the MPR by the cafeteria for students to find their new teacher’s name and room number, and they will remain posted in the MPR on the first day of school if you’re unable to attend. Staff carefully considered program needs for each student before placement was made. Due to instructional program needs, I will not consider any room changes until the end of the 2nd week of school. Also, please keep in mind that your child’s classroom assignment could change. Based on current enrollment we are not anticipating split grades in the neighborhood school, general ed. Enrollment sometimes increases or decreases unexpectedly, which can either avoid a split grade or create one. If you have any concerns about your child’s placement, please come to the main office and log your statement in the “Concerns Log Book.” We ask for your continued parental support as your child adjusts to his/her new teacher. We look forward to meeting you at orientation, the social, or on the first day of instruction.
Additionally, on August 20th we invite parents of ETK, TK, and Kinder to join the principal, PTA, and EREEF in the MPR at 8:30AM in the MPR for coffee, donuts, and a chance to hear some details about the school without the distraction of your child. Please join us!
If you have any questions, please call the school at (323) 254-6851 between the hours of 7:30AM and 4:30PM. The main office is now open for enrollment, and will be happy to assist after 8:00AM and before 4:00PM. Also, we encourage you to explore our website for additional information you might find helpful. Bookmark us!
We are looking forward to a great year at Eagle Rock Elementary & Magnet Center, where our vision ROCKS! See you soon!
